Gavels
These
unique gavels are turned from fruitwood; apple and pear
being abundantly available in our home county of Herefordshire.
The gavel and block displayed has an apple head with
a pear insert, handle and block. The dark rings are
scoured into the pieces during the turning process.
Each turned component is finished, sealed and waxed
on the lathe.
The round headed gavel, or "maul"
as it is technically known, is turned from a solid piece
of "spalted" applewood. Spalted is the term applied
to timbers that have additional decorative features
introduced when the wood has been affected by a fungal
attack. Mauls of this size are designed to stand upright,
on a flattened head, whilst not in use.
We specialise in turning gavels
and mauls of various designs therefore please contact
us with your specific requirements.
